Street lighting might not be something you think much about, but consider this: the United State has 50 million streetlights, and in many areas they account for up to 40% of a municipal energy costs. With the advent of LED lighting that’s set to change though, and Cree wants to be the company that does the changing. Today Cree announced their newest streetlight product: an LED design that uses 65% less energy than today’s non-LED products while lasting 400% longer, and that costs a quarter of competitive LED streetlights.

Cree’s product is called the XSPR LED Residential Street Light, and it will sell for $99. While that’s higher than the price of a standard streetlight today — one using high-pressure sodium (HPS) — the cost is much lower in the long run because the Cree uses less energy and it lasts 3-4 longer than a typical HPS.

High-pressure sodium has a cheap up-front cost (often under $20 per lamp) but they don’t last that long and they are inefficient.Know about led high bay conversion kit and Bi-xenon HID kit. This is possible mainly because of the Cree’s low price. $300-$400 LED streetlights will buy themselves back over time because of lower operating costs, but it’ll take years, long enough that ailing municipalities can put off the expense and use the money on something more pressing. $99 is a different story though, and that’s before you factor in energy savings. Cree’s XSPR LED lights come in two different versions, a 75W-equivalent model that runs at 25W and a 100W-equivalent model that runs at 42W, both of which have a minimum CRI of 70. These directly replace HSP lights that consume about 80W and 119W at the system level.

Once you understand how much your town will save the next question likely concerns how Cree was able to pull this off. Cree attributes the price to multiple less-than-tangible characteristics, including their Nano Optic Delivery Grid optics (which puts all the light where you want it and none where you don’t), the use of Cree’s in-house BetaLED tech, and a clever cost-saving hardware design. Ultimately, it’s not really clear how Cree pulled this off and still managed to have a product that’s made in America, is dimmable, has a 10-year warranty, and is both UL and IP66 certified.

Street/roadway lighting might not make much difference to you, but it’s worth coming away from this news with this: LED lighting is coming fast and Cree is determined to get a major piece of the pie early on. Cree’s XSP lights were used in the world’s largest streetlight retrofit project last year in Los Angeles, and the XSPR uses are a newer, more affordable design.A solar lantern uses this sunlight that is abundantly available to charge its batteries through a Solar Panel and gives light in nighttime. Today’s solutions — like HSP — might be affordable at first, but their inefficiency and poor light quality means their days are numbered.
